Skyline literacy

As part of the Entrepreneurship minor, students are members of the Gilliam Center for Entrepreneurship. Suzanne Bergmeister, the Executive Director, challenged our class to design a JMU apparel item to raise funds for a local nonprofit. My group selected Skyline Literacy, an organization dedicated to "providing instruction, based on need, in various literacies for adults in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, using trained and qualified instructors and volunteers."

Task- Chose a local Harrisonburg nonprofit to raise money for through apparel sales

As the graphic designer for this project team, I looked through many references for college-based apparel. After collaborating with the other team members we went for a simpler design.

Looking back, I would have chosen either design 1 or 2 because I believe those are more visually appealing and JMU specific.

For our apparel, we chose a bone-colored t-shirt featuring the slogan "Don't Mess with the Dukes" and sold it on campus to JMU students and parents. Our design choices were primarily based on saving money on production. We did a t-shirt and one-color print which was the cheapest route.

Looking back, I think our group would have sold shirts faster if we worried less about production costs and more on the overall design.

Within our budget, we were able to order 107 t-shirts. Out of those, we sold out with 104 shirts, and donated 3 to the nonprofit heads. We offered a student discount of 15% and the pricing for everyone else was $30. From using Square, we received $88 in transaction fees. Our total net revenue was $2,756.78.
